THREE SIMPLE THINGS THAT WILL IMPROVE YOUR WRITING IMMEDIATELY.

Ever heard of that old advert, your wife is having an affair…with Ignis. Ignis is a brand of gas cookers. Everyone loved that advert then, but I’m sure it won’t be so funny now. The feminists would eat them raw for suggesting that women are the only ones who cook. But this article isn’t about the changing times. It’s about love affairs. And I happen to have one, not with Ignis. My cooker is scanfrost. But with words. I love words. After God, my husband and kids, my family, the body of Christ, the next thing that is on my list is words! I love to read them. I love to hear them. I love to write them! I love to speak them (Am I the only one who thinks the above statement is incorrect?) I love to teach others about them. I love to…well… like to edit them I like to bless people with them… Make money off them… I love words. And when you love something, you tend to know a lot about it. So when I tell you that there are three things you can do to improve you writing immediately, I hope you believe me. For every copy I edited while working with my editor at Vanguard Newspapers for five years. For every book I’ve edited since Laju Iren Publishing began unofficially three years ago, I have found this theory to be true. I have seen it work on the students who have taken my various writing webinars and workshops. You can read their reviews here. These three things will change your writing for ever. KNOW YOUR LANGUAGE I remember being extremely unimpressed with an actress’ performance in a movie. The movie was in English and I couldn’t help but wonder why she had been chosen for the role. Sometime later, I saw her act in a Yoruba movie. I couldn’t believe she was the same person. There are some people that are very good at Yoruba and English movies. But not this particular actress. Her English was really flowing, but in the Yoruba movie! She was something else. If it was within my power, I would have recommended her for an Oscar! It’s the same with writing. If you’re really going to blossom, then you must know your language. If your preferred language is English, there are three simple areas you must focus. If you trust me on this, you’ll begin to see immediate results. I’ve edited hundreds of articles and reviewed hundreds of pages of my students’ work. I can tell you for free-common writing errors are tied to a lack of understanding of these three. PUNCTUATION MARKS PARTS OF SPEECH CONJUNCTIONS In my webinar, Anybody Can Write which is available at N5000 only, I teach these in detail. You can click here to take that webinar. It will be the most productive 5k you’ve ever spent…except of course you’ve taken any of my other 5K webinars. Seriously though, try out what I’m saying. Study punctuation marks. Intentionally use the knowledge you learn in creative writing. Learn the parts of speech. When you are about to use a word, google what part of speech it is and how it should be used. Then take out time to specifically study conjunctions. You’d be surprised to know that there are so many of them. Perhaps if you learned them, you might stop using ‘and’ four times in one sentence and people will stop running away when they want to read your work. KNOW YOUR SUBJECT This second point is so important, especially when you’re writing a book. You might be able to wing it with a short blog post, but if you’re ignorant about the subject matter, you can only fool your audience for a few lines. Do you really want to improve your writing? Then research is your friend. KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE A few years ago, I put together research for my Masters’ degree in Mass Communication from the University of Lagos. To the glory of God, it earned me a PhD slot. I still haven’t begun my PhD yet, but that’s not the purpose of this gist. I said all that to tell you that if you read that project, you might find it hard to believe that I wrote it. It sounds em…sophisticated. Why? Audience. The audience is different. When I write blog posts and books, I write with my audience in mind. I don’t write for you guys like I’m writing for my lecturers. When next you pick up a pen…wait do people still use pens to write? When next you pick up your computer or your phone or anything to write, think about your audience. Write for them. I’m sure these tips helped. To learn more, take any of my writing courses. In fact, I’m recommending that you take Speak Like a Pro, Write Like a Genius. I put together this course with my friend, Bella Rose Okojie who is an award-winning On Air Personality. And if you hurry, you can save a whooping 30 percent on an already affordable course by paying the early bird price now. To register for any of my other courses, click here. Thank you very much for these tips, PL. Tip #2 is actually crucial, even though it isn’t my favourite thing to do. I’m definitely looking forward to taking one of your courses soon.

I love this blog you made, Mrs. Iren. This is my first time visiting your website and I have a question. I have this passion for writing (although I have never finished a long book). I’m 13 and I’m just wondering if it’s ok for a Christian like me to write fictional stories about faries, other realms etcetera and it somewhat relates to my life?

Hmmm. Why don’t you take one of my courses or book a consulting session so we can talk about this in detail and I can read your work and review.
