I don’t care if your smiles

Are as beautiful as the stars in the skies,

It doesn’t matter if your voice,

Makes my simple heart melt like ice

Even though the sound of your voice,

Could make one believe you’re the perfect choice,

I’ll muster all my strength and state,

Again that I choose to wait.

Words from your mouth may taste like honey,

And I have no doubt you’re flowing in money,

I’ll say this slowly so you can hear me,

With honey comes the sting of a bee,

And money’s love is the root of evil, you see,

You can laugh and call me an ancient oldie,

All because I won’t let you hold me

In words and actions I’ll state,

Again, that I choose to wait.

I wrote this piece over a decade ago. I was in SS2 and it was shortly after someone had ‘seriously’ asked me out for the first time. I’m thankful for my parents and sisters who made me realize early on that it was okay to be secure in who I was as a teen and that I didn’t really need any romantic relationship at that time to confirm how special I was. No one pulled my ear and said: “no boyfriend!” I just grew up in an environment that made me know that when it was time, I would be a woman in God’s will, and that a man (not a boy) who knew God’s plan for his life would show up.

Guess what? He did show up! Patience in relationships is indispensable. Whether it’s choosing to wait to marriage to have sex or choosing to wait till you’re mature before getting into a relationship. Please share with a teenager or young person.
